We had the good fortune of connecting with Jon Madray and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jon, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
Consistency. From my experience, consistency has been the single most important factor to ensuring success of any brand. Consistency creates accountability. Companies need to have accountability in order to create a good reputation and brand presence. This explains why most companies will have a form of structure like 40 hour work weeks and meeting deadlines for tasks. This structure keeps them consistently getting tasks completed, ensuring long term growth in the business. It also reflects on a company’s values and standards. In the music world, you cannot just come out with 1 song and then take 2 years off. In order to remain relevant in the music business, you have to continue creating and releasing music. This will create a bigger fanbase over time, and also keep them engaged with your work. And yes, you will have many obstacles when trying to achieve your goals, but the success of any brand depends on consistency, even when you are faced with failure. To me, success is like a rollercoaster; you will have many ups but also MANY downs. I think that is something that’s often overlooked because most will only see the end product instead of the blood, sweat, tears, and even years it took to get there. When you have obstacles, you cannot just give up. You MUST remain consistent because you don’t know if that next week/month or year will be THE year. The majority of “successful” individuals have probably failed more times than the next person has attempted, and that is what separates the ones who “make it” from the ones who don’t. Consistency is key.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
One thing that musically set’s me apart from others is that I am essentially trying to create a new genre in music. I am from the caribbean country of Guyana and although my music can be categorized as electronic, I have been adding caribbean elements and instruments to my recent productions. As for acting, I am just doing more of what I love and most importantly, trying to represent for my community. The acting world has also been fairly new to me, and I refrained from exploring it for years. The reason for this was because I was so involved in music and that’s all my brand consisted of. I thought it would have confused my followers if I suddenly switched to that. Eventually, I got involved in comedy skits and I did a few of those to test the waters. I also studied a bit of acting in college and decided that I really enjoyed it and wanted to pursue it even further. So today, I guess I’m just categorized as an Actor/Musician, but ultimately I just love to create!
Any great local spots you’d like to shoutout?
Ah man this is a fun one! Well let’s see here.. If you’re in LA and you want to eat, hang out, watch a movie, or do some shopping I’d recommend visiting The Grove. If you want to party, there are so many local places to check out but my favorite has to be The Soho House. For sightseeing and all that jazz, hike on the Hollywood Hills and check out The Griffith Observatory or any nearby beaches!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I am a firm believer that your environment and what you consume daily will affect your life. When I say consume, I don’t just mean eat, but what you listen to, read, watch on tv, and who’s energy you’re surrounding yourself with. Being mindful of these things is essential and can really play an important role in your life. I am thankful to have supportive friends and family members who keep me going. As for books, I usually like to read stuff that makes me feel motivated. Some books that I’d recommend are ‘The Secret’ by Rhonda Byrne, ‘How To Be A Bawse’ by Lilly Singh, and ‘You Are A Badass’ by Jen Sincero.
